This year was a damn sight better than the last.
Kevin sighs as he moves closer to Nick, pressing up against his back and lazily rubbing circles on his abdomen. This year Nick's birthday had been spent in a cottage by the sea up close to San Fransisco, drinking wine by the fire, walking hand in hand along the beach and making love any time they saw fit. Their entire weekend was a haze of romance and solitude in the beach house Kevin had purchased years ago and never shared with anyone until now. He kisses Nick's neck, right below the fringe of soft blonde hair that tickles his nose and lips, and his lover stirs in his embrace.
"What time is it?" Nick asks sleepily.
"Shh, 3 or 4, no clue. Go back to sleep." He tightens his embrace and holds him closer, if that's possible.
"Can't. I'm awake now." Nick turns, forcing Kevin to relax a bit, and then throws a leg over him, smiling in the dark. "Can't sleep?"
"Just thinking, baby. Go back to sleep." He kisses Nick's forehead with a contented sigh.
"Not sleepy anymore," he chuckles, moving his hand between them to stroke Kevin's length. "And you aren't either."
"Go to sleep." He's laughing now, his protest a mere formality.
"Tell me what you're thinking, and maybe I will." He lies, because his hands are doing wicked, wicked things to his lover.
The silence is pronounced, and Nick's hands become still. "Kevin? Baby, what's wrong?" he asks with a hoarse whisper and finds himself pulled into a fierce embrace, his head tucked beneath Kevin's chin.
"Just counting my blessings, Nick." In the bittersweet silence, he recalls Nick's last birthday. The debacle in the studio, the blonde with her face on his cake, the simpering sucking up that occurred ... and the way he had fervently wished he could feel his hands around her scrawny throat. For months he'd watched, for months he'd held his tongue, just biding his time.
It seemed hopeless for a while, but prayers do get answered, and he was there to pick up the pieces and help Nick move on, to move past her ludicrous accusations and venomous statements to the press. He was there to show him what love was supposed to feel like, to remind him that he'd been there all along, just waiting, and would be there forever if that's what he wanted.
"I love you."
"I know, Nick. That's the greatest blessing of them all."
Yes, this year was a damn sight better than the last.
